MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING
There's more to life than chasing money
Money is NOT everything.
I know most of you know that, but I wanted to use this special day to reflect on important things.
Today, by the time you are reading this, I’ll be taking an exam. Not any exam, THE EXAM. This is the most important exam we take here in Spain, and I’ve been training for it for the past 2 years. Depending on my grade, I’ll access one university or another, which means I’ll be able to pursue one career or not. It’s a big deal.
Let’s jump right into it!
In today’s post, I’ll cover:
Was all the studying pointless?
What is there in life?
Studying shouldn’t be a duty but a gift.
What does this have to do with my newsletter?
Was all the studying pointless?
I want to believe that wasn’t the case, and I hope so.
Why did I waste most of my last two years studying for a test? To access university? I think so, but… I’m not sure why, pursuing a job is not something I’m really keen on.
But, if I access the university that I want and study the career I want, then it does have meaning. Doesn’t it? I’m so lost.
I do like studying, as much as I’m interested in the subject, most of the subjects I’ve studied for the past two years have neither been of interest to me nor explained in an appealing way. All I’ve done is memorize History, not learning it, just knowing what to say after each word.
That’s all the test is about, knowing perfectly certain subjects so that you get the highest grade. It’s not about learning.
Other subjects, which are more interesting to me, physics, and maths, haven’t been that hard, I’ve probably spent 20 to 1 the time compared to learning history compared with math, yet the latter is the one I’m interested in. Then, was it all a waste of time? What is there to life? Why do we study? Why do we work? Other species don’t, why us, the most “intelligent species“ spend all our time working, we are certainly smarter than that. Aren’t we?
What is there in life?
This is getting too philosophical, way too quickly, and I don’t like lacking answers. There are a few simple things that probably are all we need for a “great life”. Maybe here is where I find the meaning behind my countless hours of studying.
I bet these are the main pillars of life:
Pursuing your passion.
Learning about life.
Building a family.
Pursuing your passion.
We all have to be doing something. For the time being, we haven’t figured out a way to live without having nothing to do. And I don’t think if that day ever comes, we’ll be any happier.
Wouldn’t life be so boring… The truth is that life is already pretty boring for most people, maybe it’s also boring for you (I hope not).
What better way to do so than by working in a field you are interested in? (Studying will help get this)
Learning about life.
What do you mean? We are all interested in random things, that seemingly have nothing to do with what we are studying or what we work at, whatever it is, we are interested in many things, and we love learning about them.
We are all interested in what ancient people in the past though, that’s why we study philosophy, as well as interested in why other people don’t share our opinion on certain topics.
We are also interested in History, we love learning from other people, and learning what life is about, that’s why we love thinking about Ancient Rome, and many other crucial historical events.
But… That’s exactly what we are taught in school, right? (Studying wasn’t so useless after all…)
Building a family.
For some people that isn’t a priority, but deep inside most people, regardless of their financial conditions, they would love to build a family with someone they love, and even raise kids.
How is studying related to this? It’s safe to say that studying provides certain stability, that’s why most people are so invested in trying to get a degree, and a safe job. Also, studying will make you better off, thus, more able to afford to have a family in today’s economy.
So, studying is the way to achieve all we need in life. That’s probably true, or at least, most things. You aren’t going to find your wife by studying in History class. But… maybe, studying as a whole will. Let me elaborate.
Studying isn’t only about getting good grades in school, which is nice, but not too relevant. Studying goes far beyond that. Learning about how to live in a society will teach you way more than all the history books you can ever read will.
Thus, studying is everything in life. (right?)
Studying is a gift.
Many people, would wish to know just half of what you know, you are lucky. Thankfully studying is becoming increasingly more accessible.
You can just open your browser of choice and learn about anything you are interested in.
The problem relies on what is being taught in school and how that is being taught. Here in Spain, just as with any other country, we don’t learn what we are interested in, fair enough, we don’t know what we are even interested in if we don’t give it a try. But one thing is teaching a subject, and a whole different thing is forcing people to learn something.
Maybe I would be interested a little bit more in language and its history if I didn’t have to learn how the hell to analyze the structure of every sentence.
But, if we take school out of the way, and think just about the opportunities that come with being able to read what people from all the world and times have written, is truly a miracle.
What does this have to do with my newsletter?
Today I wanted to make this email more personal and reflect on the true meaning of why we even do things.
Why do you want to grow on Social Media?
To make more money? Then let me tell you, there is way more to life than that. Just the same as with studies, it isn’t everything, and there always are different alternatives in life.
Maybe studying the traditional way (college) isn’t the only way. But, maybe making more the traditional way (9 to 5) isn’t either. But neither is overspending to impress other people nor living a life we don’t enjoy just for the sake of achieving fuck knows what.
Whatever you do in life, beware of the alternatives, and the reasons why you are taking the path you are taking.
And, unlike with other decisions. There is going back, if you’ve made a bad choice, you can always try to change your position in life, to embrace your goals.
Never give up on your dreams.
