Become more Disagreeable

That's the key to win

Stop Pleasing Everyone

Pleasing everyone only makes you seem like a good person in the short term. In the long term, this practice will end with you.

Last week, I read a post from someone who explained one of his keys to success, is not giving a fuck about what other people think of your ideas. Especially when it comes to writing.

Let’s jump right into it!

In today’s post, you’ll learn:

  • Why do you want to please everyone?

  • Why you shouldn’t.

  • Examples of disagreeable people.

Why do you want to please everyone?

I understand it’s not a pleasurable activity opposing someone's ideas. We also don’t want to make enemies everywhere we go. Thus, we always try to “shift to fit”.

That means we are rarely true to ourselves, only when we have great confidence with someone, we speak more freely. But, when you meet a stranger online, although you know there’s nothing that person could do to you, you usually tend to agree with that person. As well as not sharing our “hot takes“.

We are afraid of not being approved by other people. We just want to fit in. The truth is if you want to succeed, you must stand out. That means you must be true to yourself. Especially in Social Media, which is what I want to talk about.

Why you shouldn’t.

Being more disagreeable, makes you stand out, as well as create controversies around your posts.

Let me explain in depth why these two things are crucial.

The obvious one is that as you stop being like everyone else, you will stand out. People don’t want to be reading over and over again the same boring stuff. We all want to learn new things. Even if what I’m reading goes against my ideas.

It also triggers people's emotions, thus, people are more likely to reply to your post. Either praising you for explaining what they also think, but wouldn’t say online (which happens more often than you think), or replying with their ideas, and explaining why you are so wrong. This conflict between ideas, makes people engage in conversations. Each person trying to prove the other wrong. Therefore, people spend more time on your post, which is what every platform wants. Your post will be boosted.

And more importantly, you’ll feel better, when you stop trying to please other people, you start to talk what you really think, that way you start acting true to yourself. There is no better feeling.

Examples of disagreeable people.

When you research public speakers, you’ll find most of these influencers are all very disagreeable. That doesn’t mean they are bad people, they just talk about what they believe to be true. They are true to themselves.

I’m just going to mention a few celebrities who you surely have at least heard of.

Gary Vee: This entrepreneur, is anything but agreeable. You may try to convince him about how your product is going to revolutionize the industry, or how you are trying your best to grow on Social Media. He has no problem in telling people why they are wrong, and something cool about him, is that he doesn’t only criticize, but also gives solutions.

Jordan Peterson: Regardless of what your political ideas are, this individual has mastered his speaking skills. He can give you a thousand different reasons why he’s right, and you aren’t. He also has no problem in telling people they are straight-up wrong.

Joe Rogan: He is well known, for his podcast, which has over two thousand episodes. He invites people from every field, every country, and every ideology. But he won’t agree with you unless he truly believes is true.
