Be Careful with Social Media Analytics

The double-edge sword behind data on Social Media like Twitter.

Checking analytics is holding you back

In this 2’ post, you’ll find out what you might be doing wrong, and learn what you need to do

Analytics are very important

Ehhh, sorry? You just said the opposite. Actually, as you thought, and as everyone knows analytics are something important

There is a lot of knowledge to be found, and it can help us improve a lot, but…

There are a lot of problems that come when you don’t use them the right way

Let me explain each of them, and the easiest solution for it

Anxiety

When you start checking your metrics, you want to have the validation that what you are doing is good, enough, but sometimes it may not be

For example, you might have averaged 500 thousand views every month on some platform, and if from one month to another that plumbed to 100 thousand, it can be tough for you, of course, this would be something important and would mean you are doing something bad, an 80% plump is not normal at all

But if you start looking at your analytics one day after another, a few times every couple of hours, you’ll develop anxiety, for a simple reason, you won’t be able to match your expectations every time, unless you have none, which I doubt

Take me as an example, imagine one day I’ve made 1 million views on Twitter, you know how it feels when the next day you are unable to get even a tenth of that? This has happened to me before, I’ve found myself checking analytics more than 20 times a day, why? To see if I was any good, was checking analytics for me any helpful? No. I was only looking for validation

Therefore, I was wasting my time, which I also want to talk about

You waste too much time

The main problem with analytics is that you feel productive when you check them, the truth is that you are not doing anything

Unless you are analyzing what works well, and what doesn’t, just checking the number of views you earn each day tells you nothing that you can put into practice

This always happens we are all addicted to approval, analytics is not only when you check how many followers you grew yesterday, or the number of views you earned, but also the number of likes you got in your latest post

Perfection doesn’t exist

Stop looking for perfection, analytics usually make people try to look for what are the things that make a post perfect, and then try to put everything together. It doesn’t work

Instead of trying to learn why some posts blow and others don’t. It is better to try different things and hit post. The more posts you share, the better you’ll get at posting, it’s all about trial and error. You have to figure out your style, what might work for someone probably doesn’t work for you too

Conclusion + Solution

Although this post probably didn’t tell you anything you didn’t know already, it’s always good to bring things back, so you can reflect on them, and hopefully, this 2-minute post will save you thousands of hours looking at analytics

There’s a magical question that will save you from wasting so much time. Every time before checking analytics ask yourself this question, most times you won’t even check them after asking yourself it:

WHY AM I GOING TO CHECK ANALYTICS?
